The White House informed this Wednesday (19) that the National Security Advisor of the United States, Jake Sullivan, spoke by telephone with the advisor to the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil for international affairs, Celso Amorim.
“[Eles] discussed a range of bilateral and global issues, including Russia’s war with Ukraine, continued cooperation to combat climate change and protect the environment,” the statement said.
Also according to the document released to the press, the two discussed the G20 and “the shared efforts to preserve democratic institutions”.
The conversation takes place in the same week that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) gave statements interpreted as “pro-Russia”, in which he insinuated that the United States and the European Union favored the prolongation of the conflict.
In an interview in the United Arab Emirates, on Sunday (16th), Lula stated: “President Putin does not take peace initiatives. Zelensky does not take peace initiatives. Europe and the United States end up contributing to the continuation of this war”.
The speech generated reactions from both the US and the EU, who denied they were prolonging the war and even stressed that Russia would be solely to blame for the battle, which has lasted more than a year.
A CNN , the European Union ambassador reinforced that the invitation for Lula to go to Ukraine is “very useful”. After the controversy, the PT said it condemned “violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine”.
