The United States Senate on Thursday passed a bill that provides for $1.5 trillion to fund the federal government through September 30 and allocate $13.6 billion to help Ukraine.
The 2,700-page bill passed in a bipartisan vote by 68 votes to 31, a day after the House of Representatives passed the package.
US President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill into law, preventing government agencies from closing before midnight on Friday, when existing US government resources expire.
“We are fulfilling our promises to support Ukraine as they fight for their lives against the cruel Vladimir Putin,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, referring to the president of Russia, who orchestrated an attack on the neighboring country.
Aid to Ukraine is intended to finance munitions and other military supplies, as well as humanitarian support.
The law’s passage follows months of negotiations over federal government funding and, therefore, political priorities.
It also comes as lawmakers press to show support for Ukraine in its battle against Russian forces, with Democrats and Republicans alike saying the Biden administration must do more to help Kiev.
