US: Senators call for Russia’s expulsion from Human Rights Council

Twelve members of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee have called on President Joe Biden’s government to push for the expulsion of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, citing Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a letter seen by Reuters yesterday, the eight Democrats and four Republicans called on US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield to introduce a resolution on the expulsion of Russia from the Council of Human Rights. in Ukraine and the destruction of homes, hospitals and schools.

Support for Ukraine is one of the few points of the cross-party agreement in the divided US Congress, which has approved billions of dollars in aid to the government in Kyiv.

“Immediate action must be taken to show the world that the United States and our allies do not tolerate indiscriminate and unprovoked attacks on civilians and democracies. The time has come for Russia to no longer have a seat on the Council,” Signed by Republican Sen. Jim Ritz and Commission President Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez, among others.

In the letter, the senators state that states that follow a pattern of blatant and systematic violations of rights can be expelled by a two-thirds majority vote of the United Nations General Assembly.

“We urge you to submit a resolution to the UN General Assembly calling for the expulsion of the Russian Federation from the UN Human Rights Council immediately,” the senators said in a letter.
