A group of five US senators sent an open letter to the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, demanding an “immediate end” of testing the Novi cryptocurrency wallet.
The working group that prepared the open letter included Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has repeatedly spoken out against the adoption of cryptocurrencies. Senators Brian Schatz, Sherrod Brown, Richard Blumenthal and Tina Smith also signed the letter.
“Given the scale of the scandals surrounding your company, we express strong resentment over Facebook’s renewed efforts to launch the cryptocurrency and digital wallet, now known as Diem and Novi, respectively. Earlier, Facebook stopped developing the Libra cryptocurrency, but our concerns remain valid with a new initiative, ”the letter says.
Senators stressed that Facebook’s leadership has repeatedly stated that it will not launch digital currency without the approval of the US authorities. However, testing of Novi’s digital wallet suggests the opposite – the social network is aggressively preparing a new payment infrastructure and a new digital currency.
“Apart from the risks that products like Diem pose to financial stability, you have not explained how to combat illegal use and other criminal activities. We urge you to immediately stop the Novi pilot project and promise that you do not plan to launch the digital currency Diem, ”the officials concluded.
Recall that the launch of the Novi pilot project became known only a few hours ago. Testing takes place in conjunction with the Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange.
