US: Senior official ” optimistic ” that Europe will eventually impose embargo on Russian oil and gas

LAST UPDATE: 17:22

A senior White House adviser said on Friday that he was optimistic that Europe was determined to impose an embargo or further curtail Russia’s remaining oil and gas exports as Moscow’s war on Ukraine dragged on, Reuters reported.

“I’m convinced that Europe has received the message and is determined to shut down this latest source of export revenue,” said Dalip Singh, the White House’s deputy national security adviser, in an interview with CNN.

Oil exports are the Kremlin’s main source of foreign exchange, and several voices within the European Union have called for an end to oil payments because they are essentially financing Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Singh, the White House chief of staff for sanctions against Russia, said talks on the issue were ongoing. “It’s important that they do this as soon as possible. And that they do it in a way that is smart,” he said.

Measures to curb Russian energy exports to Europe must be designed to hurt Russian President Vladimir Putin’s revenues so that they can not be used to fund his war machine, Singh said.

“And they have to be designed in a way that does not cost Europe and the rest of the world the most. So that’s the debate right now.”
