Federal court compels the House Marines of the US to allow Sikh recruits to grow beards and wear the traditional turban, rejecting the argument that doing so would harm the cohesion of the sector.
The Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard of USA they already allow Sikhs to join their ranks while respecting the rules of this monotheistic religion, which emerged in the 16th century in northwest India. Sikhism prohibits men from cutting their hair and beards and requires them to wear a turban.
However, The US Marine Corps refused to grant exemptions to three Sikhs who sought to enlist last year, arguing they should be “deprived of their individuality” in order to work as a team.
A Washington appeals court on Friday rejected that argument, finding that the Marine Corps administration did not provide evidence that the beard and turban would affect safety or the smooth conduct of training.
