Categories for desertion were charged against American soldier Travis King for his illegal entry into North Korea through the demilitarized zone, the American media announced yesterday, Thursday.
The US military announced eight charges against this soldier, who was deployed to South Korea, including assaulting other soldiers and possessing child pornography, according to a document released by US media. He is also accused of false statements and for illegal possession of alcoholic beverages. Desertion is punishable by a sentence that can reach up to three years imprisonment. After a drunken bar brawl that landed him in a South Korean prison, Private King was due to return to the United States in July.
But he managed to sneak out of Seoul Regional Airport, join a group of tourists visiting the demilitarized zone and cross the fortified border into North Korea, where he was arrested by communist authorities. Pyongyang had stated that the soldier he deserted to escape “mistreatment and racial discrimination that existed within the American army”.
But after completing its investigation, North Korea “decided to deport” King in September on charges of illegal entry into its territory. A Pentagon spokeswoman, Sabrina Singh, said King, who returned to the U.S. in late September, will have to follow a “reintegration program”which includes medical exams and mental health assessments.
The two Korean states are still technically located in war since the end of the conflict on the peninsula in 1953, which ended in a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty, and the border between them is heavily fortified.
