US: South Carolina mall shooting leaves injured, police say

A shooting left 12 injured in a mall in South Carolina, in the United States, on Saturday afternoon (16). In total, 10 people were shot and the severity of their injuries has yet to be confirmed, according to the Columbia Police Department. Three suspects were arrested.

Authorities evacuated the Columbiana Center Mall, where the crime took place, and asked shop owners who were still inside the mall not to leave until they were escorted.

“Employees inside the mall who have been instructed to take shelter in place for security, the police will come to you as a protected escort. DO NOT leave a store until instructed to do so by the proper authorities,” local police said on Twitter.

Police are evaluating the scene, according to WIS, an affiliate of the CNN, and the mall’s main entrance was closed. Parts of the I-26 highway near Harbison, South Carolina, were also closed, the WIS reported.

A gathering point has been set up near the mall, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. The area is open to “those with loved ones involved in the Columbiana Mall shooting,” the department tweeted.

The meeting point is the Fairfield Inn at 320 Columbiana Drive.

Authorities are urging residents of the area to be careful as it will be a “high traffic area”.
