“US stands ready to defend every inch of NATO territory,” says Kamala

US Vice President Kamala Harris met with Polish President Andrzej Duda on Thursday morning (10). The meeting was surrounded by uncertainty about a Western plan to supply fighter jets to Ukraine.

Ukraine requests Soviet-era jets so it can fight the Russian invasion. Poland’s proposal to first transfer ownership of MiG-29 aircraft to the United States caught Biden officials completely off guard and was rejected by the Pentagon.

Despite the apparent disconnect between countries on this issue, in a press release after the meeting, Kamala said the countries are united in what they have done, and prepared to help Ukraine.

Still, Harris avoided addressing the jets episode directly. Harris highlighted the military support the United States is already providing to Ukraine lacking airpower, including anti-tank missiles.

“We’re doing deliveries every day in terms of what we can do,” Harris said. Asked what else Ukraine could expect, Harris said “this is an ongoing process and it will not stop as needed.”

Poland represents the eastern flank of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) military alliance.

“What is at stake right now are some of NATO’s guiding principles. And, in particular, the question of the importance of defending sovereignty and territorial integrity and, in this case, Ukraine,” Harris said at the press conference.

“The United States is prepared to defend every inch of NATO territory. The United States takes it seriously that an attack on one is an attack on all,” Harris said.

Speaking alongside the Polish president, Harris said his presence in Warsaw is a sign of American commitment to the military alliance.

“I am here in Poland as an expression of the lasting and important relationship, which, again, is long-standing, but in particular on the Ukraine issue it is unified and clear: we will do everything together in partnership, in solidarity to support what is needed at this very moment. moment in terms of the humanitarian and security needs of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” she said.

She said the US is fulfilling requests to supply Poland with Patriot missiles.

“What also compels us is the moral outrage that all civilized nations feel when we look at what is happening: men, women, children, grandparents, innocent grandparents who are running away from it all,” Harris said.

Harris said “atrocities of unimaginable proportions” are taking place in Ukraine.
