Starbucks announced a series of measures in favor of its employees, mainly wage increases, on Tuesday, at a time when a movement in favor of the establishment of a labor union is expanding in the coffee chain, against which the head of the company supported.
The coffee chain has clarified the salary increases it had announced earlier, according to which the minimum wage in stores in the US will be set from August 1 at $ 15 per hour.
This increase as well as a restructuring plan for Starbucks stores will cost $ 200 million, bringing the total cost of the company for 2022 to $ 1 billion.
The announcements came as the Seattle-based company was faced with an unprecedented movement in its history of workers seeking union membership.
In all, by the end of 2021, employees at 250 Starbucks stores have begun the process of forming a union, according to Starbucks Workers United. Trade unions have already been set up in 47 branches following the polls.
During the presentation of the company’s financial results, the head of Starbucks Howard Souls, who took over the reins again in early April, explained why he is against the establishment of a union in the company.
“These young people have reasonable concerns,” said Schultz, 60. “They see this trade union movement being born as a possible solution.”
“However,” he added, “we have a completely different approach and a much more positive vision for our society based on listening, communication and collaboration,” Schultz explained.
“Our values ​​have never been the result of intervention by an outside entity,” he said, adding that Starbucks employees’ desire to form a union came from people unrelated to the company.
Schultz also said that Starbucks intends to adopt new initiatives in favor of employees from September, such as the possibility of giving tips on online orders and a revenue-sharing system, which, however, did not explain how it will work.
The businessman, who left the company twice in 2000 and 2017, said these new initiatives could only be implemented in stores whose employees have not been unionized.
This information may be considered as another argument to persuade Starbucks employees to vote against the union.
