The US State Department categorically denies offering amnesty to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. “This is not true. We have not made any offer of amnesty to Maduro or others since this election,” State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said on Monday (12).
“As Secretary (Antony) Blinken has said, now is the time for the Venezuelan parties to begin discussions on a respectful and peaceful transition, in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people,” he said.
“The United States is considering options to pressure Maduro to return Venezuela to a democratic path and will continue to do so. But the responsibility for clarifying the election results lies with Maduro and Venezuela’s electoral authorities,” Patel said.
