A United States B-1 strategic bomber joined South Korean and American fighters on a training mission over the Korean peninsula this Wednesday (5).
It used a guided Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) weapon with so-called bunker-busting munitions, the southern defense ministry said.
The exercise comes a day after South Korea said it will resume all military activities along its border with North Korea after suspending its 2018 military pact, which aimed to ease tension and avoid military clashes.
The JDAM was being used around the peninsula for the first time in seven years in an exercise demonstrating its precision strike capabilities, the ministry explained in a statement.
The device uses a guidance system that converts unguided free-fall bombs, including the BLU-109 penetrating warhead, into precision munitions using a navigation and control unit, the US Air Force explains.
The ministry did not specify the location of the training flight. The South Korean F-15K fighters that were flying with the B-1 performed live fire in the exercises.
Stealth jets F-35 and F-16 from the USA and South Korea also participated.
The resumption of military activities was a response to the launch of hundreds of balloons carrying garbage to the South by North Korea. The South Korean government called the action an unacceptable provocation that left it no choice but to suspend the military pact.
