US Supreme Court signals it will allow law that could ban TikTok in the country

A majority of US Supreme Court justices have signaled they may vote to uphold a bill that could ban TikTok in the country due to concerns about the social network’s ties to China.

During more than two hours of oral arguments, judges asked questions of the company’s lawyers and a group of its content creators.

Many judges indicated that they understand the law passed by the US Congress in April not as something that violates the Constitution, but as an effort to regulate potential foreign control of an application used by 170 million Americans.

The law is set to take effect on January 19 unless the Supreme Court blocks it. A decision on this issue could come quickly, long before the justices resolve other underlying questions about free speech protections.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden have raised concerns in the past about content manipulation on the platform and its data collection practices.

TikTok argued that these issues were speculative and denied claims that the Chinese government interferes in the choice of videos that millions of Americans view on the app.
