Lloyd Austin joins Ukraine’s Defense Contact Group NATO “Russia’s unprovoked and defenseless invasion is not just a threat to Ukraine,” he said. “It’s a threat to European security and an insult to the international order based on rules that protect us all.”
Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg thanked the United States for its leadership and coordination, and welcomed NATO allies’ new announcements of support for Ukraine.
He also stressed that NATO allies pledge to continue to provide Ukraine with the military equipment it needs to prevailincluding heavy weapons and long-range systems.
“NATO as an organization is also stepping up its support,” he said, noting that the Allies would agree on a new comprehensive aid package for Ukraine at the Madrid Summit. This will help Ukraine in the long run to move from the Soviet era to modern NATO equipment and enhance interoperability with NATO, the Alliance said in a statement.
