US to consider vaccination requirement for domestic travel, says Fauci

The US government is considering requiring people to be vaccinated to board domestic flights, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on Monday (27).

The US currently requires non-citizens arriving in the country by air to be fully vaccinated, but vaccination for internal locomotion is not mandatory.

Fauci said it is worth considering expanding these requirements. “You have to ask yourself why you are making this demand,” the doctor told MSNBC.

“If you’re making a demand for vaccinations for people to get on planes that are arriving in the country, that’s understandable. You don’t want to bring more cases into the country. But if you’re talking about requiring vaccination to board a domestic plane, this is just one more requirement that I think it’s reasonable to consider”, he pondered.

The infectious disease specialist did not say that he made this recommendation to President Biden, but he pointed out that the vaccine requirement for air travel creates more incentives for vaccination.

“When you make vaccination a requirement, it’s another incentive to vaccinate more people. Doing this with domestic flights is something I believe should be taken seriously,” he said.

US President Joe Biden said in an interview with ABC News that while vaccine requirements for domestic air travel were considered, “he has received the recommendation that it is not necessary.”
