The White House will announce a major package of sanctions against Russia this Friday (23), US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday (20).
The sanctions will hold Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for Russia's war in Ukraine, which turns two years old on Saturday (24), and for the death of opposition leader Alexey Navalny, according to the official.
Kirby also reinforced calls for Congress to approve the national security package, directly tying aid to Ukraine to the project, which remains stalled in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
“One of the most powerful things we can do now against Vladimir Putin, of course, is to re-pass the bipartisan supplemental national security package and support Ukraine as they continue to fight bravely and defend their country,” he highlighted.
President Joe Biden also commented on the upcoming announcement at the White House on Tuesday, telling reporters they would hear more from him on the matter this Friday.
“I said we would announce sanctions on Russia – we will have a big package announced on Friday,” he told the press before leaving the White House for a three-day fundraising campaign in California.
Meanwhile, Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told reporters in a call on Tuesday that the new sanctions against Russia will impact a “significant range of targets that we have worked persistently and diligently to identify, to continue to impose costs for the what Russia did – for what it did to Navalny, for what it did to Ukraine and for the threat it poses to international peace and security.”
