US troops arrive in Slovakia for NATO-led Saber Strike 22 exercise

US troops have arrived in Slovakia today to take part in a NATO exercise amid tensions between Russia and the West over Ukraine.

“The Saber Strike 22 exercises are dedicated to strengthening co-operation between the allies,” the head of Slovakia’s general staff, General Daniel Zmeko, told reporters. “The exercises will allow us to test our ability to work with our strongest and most militarily strategic strategic partner,” he added, as the first aircraft landed, transporting military equipment from Germany to the Koutsina base.

The exercises, which will take place March 5-10, will involve 1,200 US troops and 500 vehicles.

Slovakia is a member of the EU and NATO, but no US forces are permanently stationed on its territory.
