On March 26, 2021, the US Army entered into a manufacturing agreement with Microsoft to supply a paramilitary version of the HoloLens augmented reality glasses (IVAS) visual enhancement system. This was reported by the press service of the US Army.
The system being developed for the US Army combines multiple technologies into an architecture that allows a soldier to fight and train using a single platform.
“The suite of capabilities leverages existing high-resolution night and heat sensors, as well as onboard sensors integrated into a single display,” the press release said.
It is noted that IVAS is built on augmented reality and machine learning to create a realistic “mixed reality” training environment.
The Drive writes that it is still unclear how many IVAS units the army may eventually receive, but in the past there have been talks about procurement of up to 40,000 such systems.
The IVAS system is reportedly already capable of recognizing people’s faces, which can help in pinpointing specific people during raids.
“In the future, AI-driven systems may further help speed up the process of identifying potential threats that may not be immediately apparent, especially in real-life gunfights where things can easily get quite chaotic,” writes The Drive.
