US troops stationed in Poland are preparing to help U.S. citizens flee Ukraine in the event of a Russian invasion.
According to Reuters, officials who spoke anonymously said that the US military will not enter Ukraine to evacuate US citizens but will set up temporary facilities to host them in Poland, if necessary.
The Pentagon had announced that about 1,700 troops, mostly from the 82nd Airborne Brigade, had been deployed to Poland from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Officials said the plan had been approved by the White House and was part of a precautionary plan. The plan was first reported in a Wall Street Journal article.
A White House official said the United States was not planning a mass exodus of American citizens from Ukraine. “We are constantly assessing the security situation and planning a series of measures, as we always do,” he said.
