US: Trump asks Supreme Court not to ‘open’ documents on Capitol invasion

Former United States President Donald Trump’s lawyers on Thursday asked the country’s Supreme Court not to hand over the White House files to a special congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 invasion of the Capitol.

Two weeks earlier, a lower court rejected Trump’s claim that the files were protected by “executive privilege,” a legal doctrine that allows certain White House communications to remain confidential.

Incumbent President Joe Biden has refused to enforce executive powers over the documents in question, and the panel has challenged Trump’s allegations.

Last month, a federal district attorney ruled against Trump’s request, saying his stance “appears to be based on the view that executive power ‘exists in perpetuity’ … but the president is not a king, and the plaintiff is not a president. ”.

As for the difference of opinion between the current and former presidents, “the view of the current president is more important,” Judge Tanya Chutkan said in her ruling.

Trump appealed to the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, which upheld Chutkan’s decision.

Biden “and the Legislature have shown national interest in the matter and have highlighted the urgent need for these documents to be disclosed promptly,” said a ruling by a three-judge district court.
