Donald Trump’s candidate for the Alabama Senate election campaign is not making the expected progress.
The election of the former US president for Pennsylvania was withdrawn from the qualifying elections of the Republican Party, after the loss of custody of his children.
In Alaska and North Carolina, two other Trump-backed Senate candidates are behind in the Republican primary, POLITICO reports.
Trump may still have an iron fist in the Republican Party, but the limits of his influence will be clear in the run-up to the 2022 midterm congressional elections.
Candidates for the Senate, for whom he has publicly expressed his support, find that this support of Trump is not a guarantee of success in a by-election with many candidates.
“I think Trump voters are ready, they have the will, and they can follow the lead of a particular candidate they do not know well,” said Greg Keller, a Republican strategist who argues that the show of public support of Trump for a candidate has “high efficiency”. “But whether and when he has made political mistakes in these choices on behalf of a candidate who was not the right person or by choosing the right time to show his public support remains open,” he said.
To date, Trump has publicly backed candidates in 15 Senate elections. About half of the candidates he has backed are incumbent senators who are expected to be anointed Republicans for their seats.
The former US president has already been embroiled in other election campaigns within the party, as the manifestation of his public support was once considered enough for the final victory of the candidate he publicly supported.
However, to date this tactic has not yielded the expected result.
In Alabama, where Trump is still hugely popular, Republican MP Mo Brooks is fighting a tough party battle despite Trump publicly showing his support for him. Brooks is a veteran of the Congress, who lost in the qualifying round for the Senate in 2017, while he has collected less than half of the amount of 3.7 million dollars received by his party rival Katie Britt.
