Two top Democratic lawmakers yesterday called for Homeland Security Inspector General Joseph Koufari to recuse himself from the ongoing investigation into the exchange of cellphone messages by US intelligence agencies into the deadly January 6, 2021, invasion of the US Capitol.
House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney and House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Benny Thompson, who also heads the special committee investigating the Capitol attack, said in a letter that they have lost confidence in Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security, after failing to adequately notify Congress for months that US Secret Service cell phone messages related to January 6, 2021 may have been deleted.
“These omissions left Congress in the dark about important developments in this investigation and may require those conducting it significant time to locate relevant evidence,” Maloney and Thompson wrote.
The House Select Committee on January 6, 2021 subpoenaed the US Secret Service earlier in the month, requesting cell phone messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, before the Secret Service announced that data from some phones were lost due to data being transferred from a system that had been activated before the inspector general’s request for the data to be filed.
A spokesman for the Secret Service had no new comment on the letter, but referred to previous announcements from the Secret Service, confirming continued cooperation with all oversight bodies, as well as investigations related to January 6.
