US unemployment drops to 3.9%, but job creation in December disappoints

The economy of U.S created 199,000 jobs in December, the Department of Labor reported on Friday (7). This was the smallest number of jobs added in any month in 2021, but the rate of unemployment fell in the country.

The result fell short of market expectations. Economists had predicted employment growth of around 400,000 vacancies, more than double the reported.

Even so, 2021 will go down in history as a year of record job growth. The United States created 6.4 million jobs last year, the largest since registration began in 1939.

The unemployment rate dropped to 3.9% in December, marking a new low for the era pandemic.

Earlier in the week, the ADP Employment Report counted more than 800,000 private sector jobs in December, which had raised hopes for a good year-end.

The leisure and hospitality industry led job gains, with a modest 53,000 added, but the industry remains down 1.2 million jobs compared to the pre-pandemic period.

Professional and business services, manufacturing, construction and transportation and storage also created jobs last month.

But the underestimated gains send a clear message: the recovery is not yet complete.

At the end of 2021, the country was still with 3.6 million fewer jobs compared to before the pandemic in February 2020.
