US university professor dies after being dragged into the sea in Paraty (RJ)

American university professor, Clifford Gordon, was found dead this Sunday morning (19), in Rio de Janeiro. The professor was from the arts area at Columbia State Community College.

He was with a group of 12 community college students from Tennessee who were in Brazil on a study abroad program.

At the time of the accident, the teacher was with three other students in Paraty, on the state's Costa Verde, when they decided to stop in an area of ​​rocks to take a photo and were hit by a wave.

Clifford was dragged away and search and rescue operations were immediately carried out by Brazilian authorities. The other three students did not suffer serious injuries.

Students are receiving counseling and early return home has been arranged. The university where Clifford taught published a note of condolence.

“We were heartbroken to hear about this tragic accident. Our university family is mourning the loss of Clifford, who was a talented artist and much loved by his students. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and students.” wrote Dr. Janet F. Smith, president of Columbia State Community College.

According to the university, Clifford had been a member of the faculty since 2008, when he joined as an assistant professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences division. In 2013, he began working full-time for the college and taught classes including Introduction to Visual Arts, Art History, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, and Foundation Studio.

Clifford traveled to Brazil frequently and learned to speak Portuguese on his own.
