US President Joe Biden said on Thursday (30) that he has been asking countries in the Persian Gulf to increase oil production in order to contain the recent rise in prices. However, the Democrat denied that the appeal represents the primary objective of his trip to the Middle East in July.
During a press conference in Madrid, after a summit of leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Biden explained that he does not intend to make a request for a specific offer to Saudi Arabia.
The White House leader, however, pondered that he expects the country to make the decision on its own to increase supplies.
According to him, the main purpose of the visit is to expand Israel’s integration in the region.
The US president also said that the G7 intends to work to counter “China’s abusive practices”.
Asked how long Americans would face high fuel prices, Biden replied that it would take place while the war in Ukraine is ongoing.
