“We are here for you and with you. And of course, as we always say, because it’s true, our prayers are with you. “There is a lot of healing that will have to take place, both physical and emotional. There is no doubt that this experience is something that will remain in terms of trauma. So I urge all families and all individuals to reach out for support,” continued Harris.

Harris also used some of his comments to address the United States’ gun access policy, urging the country to “come together and speak out” on the issue.

“We have to be smarter as a country in terms of who has access to what and, in particular, assault weapons. And we have to take these things seriously,” she said.

“The whole nation must understand and have a level of empathy to understand that this can happen anywhere, in any peace-loving community. And we should stand together and talk about why this should stop,” Harris continued.

The vice president was joined on her visit by Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering, Representative Brad Schneider and Senator Julie Morrison.

On Tuesday in Chicago, a few miles from Highland Park, Harris told Congress to “have the courage” to act on an assault weapons ban and “stop protecting” gun manufacturers.

“Yesterday should have been a day to gather with family and friends to celebrate our nation’s independence and instead this community suffered a violent tragedy,” Harris said in remarks to the National Education Association.

“We need to stop this violence,” she said. “You know, I’ve said this before. Enough is enough,” she said forcefully. “Our nation is still mourning the loss of those 19 babies and their two teachers in Uvalde,” she said, referring to the massacre at a Texas school.
