US wants real, prolonged pause in fighting in Gaza, says Blinken

The United States wants real and prolonged pauses in the fighting in Gaza so that assistance can reach the people who need it, but the best way to help people would be to end the war, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said today. Wednesday (13).

“Israel, by the standards it has set, has achieved the goals it has set for itself,” Blinken told reporters during a visit to Brussels. “This should be the time to end the war.”

On Tuesday (12), after the end of the 30-day deadline given by the US for Israel to take measures to resolve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Washington stated that Israel was not blocking aid to Gaza and, therefore, was not violating US law.

Eight international aid groups said Israel had not met U.S. demands to improve access to assistance. Food security experts said famine was likely imminent in parts of Gaza.

Biden, whose term ends in January and who will be replaced by Donald Trump, has strongly supported Israel since the Hamas attack in October 2023. The attack left 1,200 dead. Another 250 people were taken hostage.

Since then, more than 43,500 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in Gaza. As a result of the war, around 2 million people were displaced and much of the Gaza Strip was reduced to rubble.

Trump, a staunch supporter of Israel, has strongly supported Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s goal of destroying Hamas. He promised to bring peace to the Middle East, but did not say how he would do it.
