The U.S. government issued a new warning to China regarding Taiwan on Saturday, ahead of a digital summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping on Monday.
During a conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed “his deep concern at the ongoing military, diplomatic and economic pressure from the People’s Republic of China against Taiwan.” reports a press release published by the State Department.
Messrs. Biden and Xi are expected to discuss for the third time tomorrow Monday night (Washington time; early Tuesday morning Beijing time) via video conference. The conversation of Messrs. Blinken and Wang were made to prepare for the meeting.
The U.S. foreign minister “urged Beijing to engage in substantive dialogue” to resolve its dispute with Taipei “peacefully and in a manner consistent with the wishes and interests of the people of Taiwan,” the statement said. FOREIGN MINISTER
The Biden and Xi summit will be held while tensions remain high between Washington and Beijing, with each side remaining firm on its positions on trade issues including human rights.
Tensions have risen sharply in recent weeks around Taiwan, which China sees as a breakaway province destined to reunite with the mainland in the future. Beijing has stepped up its military activity around the island in recent months; Washington has reiterated its commitment to helping Taipei strengthen its defenses.
The summit provides “an opportunity for the two leaders” to discuss “ways to responsibly manage the competition” of the world’s two largest economic powers, as well as to promote “co-operation in areas where their countries’ interests align”. a statement from the State Department, which reiterates virtually unchanged White House wording.
