US warns ships to avoid Red Sea until further notice

The United States Department of Transportation issued a warning to American merchant ships on Monday (15) in which it advises them to avoid the southern part of the Red Sea until further notice.

The Maritime Administration warned that “there continues to be a high level of risk” to ships transiting the southern Red Sea, including possible “retaliatory attacks” by Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Authorities said that while the decision ultimately rests with companies and ships, “it is recommended” that U.S.-flagged and U.S.-owned commercial vessels avoid the area “until further notice.”

The alert also highlighted coordinates, advising ships to remain north of Yemen in the Red Sea and east of most of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden.

An earlier warning, issued last week after US-led forces carried out attacks on Houthi installations in Yemen, advised ships to avoid the area until January 19.

That date has been extended indefinitely.
