The United States expel one Russian “Secret informant” working at United Nationssaid on Tuesday (1/3) the representative of the US delegation to the United Nations.
“On February 28, the United States also began the process of demanding the departure of a Russian intelligence agent working for the United Nations who had abused his residence permit in the United States,” the spokesman said.
The Russian who works for United Nations and is being deported, he added to the 12 Russian UN diplomats whom Washington has also ordered to leave the country amid national security concerns.
“We are sorry to be in this situation, but we have commitments with the host country,” UN spokesman Stefan Dujarric said of the deportation.
“What makes the decision a little difficult to understand is that the staff member was scheduled to end his mission on March 14,” Dujarric said.
THE Russia’s ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said on Monday (28/2) that the 12 Russian diplomats had been asked to leave by March 7. He called it a “hostile” move by the United States and said Russia would respond “because it’s a diplomatic practice.”
Reacting, Moscow said it would retaliate for the deportation of 12 US diplomats from the United States to the United Nations for alleged espionage.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Washington’s action “would not be without its appropriate response and response – not necessarily symmetrical.”
The United States said Monday that the deported diplomats were “intelligence agents” involved in espionage activities.
