A large-scale prisoner exchange between Western nations and Russia has no connection or bearing on any diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Thursday. Mr. Sullivan emphasized that “we see no connection between the negotiations on the release of prisoners and any potential diplomatic initiative on the war in Ukraine. We consider that these two issues are on different tracks.” Responding to a journalist’s question, he added that one negotiation was about “the practical issue of making this exchange”, while the second is “much more complicated”, in which “the Ukrainians will lead”, while “the US will consult intensively with allies” to support Kiev “when it is ready to step forward and engage in this kind of diplomacy.”
