US: We will not push Ukraine for territorial concessions

The US government intends to stand by Ukraine, to play a supporting role in any negotiations it has with Russia to end the armed conflict, said on Thursday the national security adviser of the US presidency, Jake Sullivan.

“We will support them and consult with them as they think about how they want to approach the outcome, through negotiations with the Russians,” he said.

Washington believes that this war “should end through diplomacy”, Mr. Sullivan continued, adding that the US government does not consider it up to it to set goals or conditions in view of the negotiations.

“Ukraine is a sovereign country, which in the final analysis will determine its own destiny,” he said during a rally in Washington. “We are not going to force them to make territorial concessions. We think that would be contrary to international law and, frankly, would be wrong.”

Washington’s support is intended to strengthen “the Ukrainians as much as possible, first on the battlefield and, ultimately, at the negotiating table,” he insisted. “We want the Ukrainians to be in the strongest possible position when a full-fledged diplomatic process begins.”
