US citizens filing new claims for unemployment insurance increased to 216,000 for the week ending October 25, the US Department of Labor (DoL) reported on Thursday. This was below the consensus forecast and the previous week’s total of 228,000 (revised from 227,000).
The report also highlighted a seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate of 1.2%, while the four-week moving average fell to 236,500, marking a decline of 2,250 from the previous week’s revised average.
Additionally, continuing claims for unemployment benefits decreased by 26,000 to reach 1,862,000 in the week ending October 18.
Market reaction
The Dollar extends its weekly decline and drags the US Dollar Index (DXY) to multi-day lows in the 103.90-103.85 band, a region that also coincides with the 200-day moving average.
