The United States will continue to support Israel with military assistance, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday (4), despite the Israeli government's refusal to open more crossings for humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip.
“We continue to support Israel's campaign to ensure that the October 7 attacks are not repeated. We provide military assistance to Israel because it is consistent with that objective,” Miller highlighted.
He also highlighted that “the Hamas leadership that planned and plotted on October 7 remains at large inside Gaza” and “continues to pose a threat to innocent civilians inside Israel.”
“We support Israel’s legitimate military campaign, consistent with international humanitarian law and that is why we continue to support them militarily,” he added.
Joe Biden's administration has faced criticism for its continued military support for the Israeli government following accusations of human rights abuses and for consistently suggesting it would not use that assistance as leverage to pressure Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
Miller also highlighted this Monday that there is more that the Israeli government “can do and more that it should do” to face the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory.
