US wins appeal against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange

Washington has won an appeal to the London Supreme Court seeking annulment of a previous ruling not to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States.

“The court allows the appeal,” said Judge Timothy Holroyd.

The judge said he was satisfied with assurances from the United States about Assange’s detention, including his commitment not to be transferred to a high-security prison in Colorado – ADX Florence, where al Qaeda members are being held in complete isolation. – and that, if convicted by a US court, he will serve his sentence in Australia.

The Supreme Court ruling brings the WikiLeaks founder closer to the US version, although the remedies have not been exhausted.

Assange’s fiancée, Stella Morris, has already said: “We will appeal this decision as soon as possible”, while she complained of “a serious judicial error”.

U.S. authorities have charged 50-year-old Assange with 18 counts of leaking WikiLeaks more than 700,000 classified documents on U.S. military and diplomatic activities, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Washington complains that lives were endangered by the leak.

If convicted, Assange faces up to 175 years in prison, a case which his supporters say is a serious attack on press freedom.

In January, British Judge Vanessa Barreicer rejected Washington’s request for Assange to be extradited to the United States, saying there was a risk of suicide.

But Washington appealed the decision, mainly questioning the credibility of an expert who testified in favor of Assange regarding his sensitive mental health.
