The United States has put some 95 million people on high alert due to a winter storm that is causing heavy snow and hail in several regions of the center of the country. The weather has already left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power.
Last Friday (4), more than 100,000 people were still without electricity in the state of Tennessee. Since Thursday, more than 300,000 homes have suffered power outages in other US states such as Texas, Arkansas and New York.
With heavy rains that also hit the south and midwest of the country, roads became slippery causing the death of at least two people in New Mexico.
The severe winter storm also affects air travel. On Friday alone, more than 3,000 flights were canceled in the US due to bad weather, which also includes hail and strong winds.
In the Boston area, home to 4.8 million people, meteorologists predicted 3 to 5 cm of accumulation of snow and ice, making road conditions dangerous.
According to experts, on Saturday morning the storm leaves the east coast of the country. However, extremely cold temperatures will remain defying record lows in the south-central US.
“Chill wind chills can result in hypothermia in a short period of time if precautions are not taken,” the National Weather Service (NWS) warned.
