US withdraws tariffs on Colombia after agreement to accept deportees

The White House said, on Sunday night (26), that Colombia agreed to the “unrestricted acceptance” of immigrants who entered the US illegally, and that President Donald Trump will not impose a 25% tariff on the country “unless that Colombia does not honor this agreement.”

“The government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returning from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay,” said press secretary Karoline Leavitt in the statement.

“Based on this agreement, fully drafted IEEPA tariffs and sanctions will be held in reserve and unsigned unless Colombia does not honor this agreement,” he added.

Leavitt said tariffs and financial sanctions will be paused, but visa sanctions against Colombian officials and the stricter customs inspections of Colombian citizens and cargo ships ordered by Trump early Sunday will remain in effect “until the first plane of deportees Colombians be returned successfully.”

The announcement comes after Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro threatened to increase retaliatory tariffs after Petro blocked the landing of two US military aircraft carrying Colombian citizens who entered the US illegally.

The statement does not say whether Trump and Petro spoke after their barrage of threats on Sunday.
