The US is accelerating the delivery of two National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) to Ukraine as soon as possible, the White House said Tuesday.
The joint US-Norway systems will help fulfill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s calls for more air defense support.
The US is on track to deliver the first two systems to Ukraine “in the very near future,” said John Kirby, communications coordinator for the National Security Council.
Biden had previously agreed to contract for eight of the NASAMS systems, which provide short to medium-range defenses. It’s the same system used to secure airspace in Washington, DC.
Kirby declined to provide a specific date for when the NASAMS systems would arrive, but said the US was “certainly interested in ramping up” the system quickly.
During an earlier virtual G7 meeting, Zelensky told the meeting that “common efforts to create an air shield for Ukraine” must be stepped up amid a flurry of Russian cruise missiles and drone strikes.
