A homeless man suspected of beating an Asian woman in central Manhattan arrested by New York police. The savage attack was recorded on video, which was published by the police, causing shock for the outbreak of violence against Americans of Asian descent.
Brandon Eliot, 38 was arrested on Tuesday night and Wednesday and is accused of an attack “instigated by hatred” as broadcast by APE-MPE. According to a police spokesman, He was staying at a hotel near Times Square, which now houses the homeless.
Many hotels in the area, which remain empty due to the pandemic, have been turned into accommodation centers. The suspect has a serious criminal record: he spent 17 years in prison, from 2002 to 2019, for stabbing and killing his mother in front of his then five-year-old sister.
The 65-year-old woman was attacked on Monday, shortly before noon, while she was on the street and going to church. In the footage taken by the security cameras, inside a building, she is seen walking when, suddenly, a man approaches her, he throws her to the ground with a kick and then hits her several times on the head. Yesterday, the police clarified that the perpetrator threw a lot of insults at her, due to her origin.

The police posted the perpetrator’s video and photos on Twitter, requesting information on his whereabouts and arrest. Residents of the area recognized the homeless man and led the authorities to the hotel where he was staying.
The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken to hospital where she was found to have broken her pelvis and suffered various other injuries.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio condemned the “horrific” and “awful” attack, while the governor of the State, Andrew Cuomo, warned that violence against people of Asian descent was developing into an “epidemic” in the United States.
