USA: A young police officer was killed while on duty

A 22-year-old police officer was killed and another was seriously injured by bullets during a police operation last Friday night in an apartment in the Haarlem district of New York, police and the mayor of the American city Eric Adams announced.

“It’s our city against the killers!” Adams, who is also a retired police officer, told a news conference. “This was not just an attack on brave police officers. It was an attack on New York City,” he added.

The tragic incident occurred when three police officers answered late yesterday afternoon to the call of a woman who was confronted with her violent son on 135th Street in northern Manhattan, police explained.

After arriving at the scene, the 47-year-old man “suddenly opened fire on them,” said Kisant Sigwell, chief of New York Police Department at Harlem Hospital.

An unnamed 22-year-old police officer was killed on the spot, and a colleague, who is being treated in critical condition, was injured.

According to several media outlets, the perpetrator – who was identified as Lawson Mannil – was shot dead by police, but so far the police have not confirmed the information.

A total of four police officers have been shot dead in New York this week.

A police officer received a bullet in the leg on Tuesday as he tried to arrest a teenager. Another police officer was also wounded in the leg by a bullet on Thursday when a man shot him through the door of an apartment where drugs were being searched.

The rise in violent crime during the pandemic is one of the key challenges facing New York’s new mayor, who was sworn in on January 1st.

The Democratic Adams was elected promising to tackle crime and called on all city forces to unite against gun violence.

“We need Washington to join us in the fight and act now to stop the proliferation of weapons in New York,” he said.

“We will find these weapons and we will find those who own them and use them,” Adams vowed.

New York has been rocked in recent days by two violent killings.

Last Saturday, 40-year-old American Michelle Go, of Asian descent, was killed when a homeless man suffering from psychological problems pushed her on the subway rails while a train was entering Times Square station.

A former 19-year-old Puerto Rican woman, Crystal Byron-Never, was killed by a robber at the cash register of a Burger King chain store in East Haarlem.
