USA: Alabama church shooting leaves two dead

Two people died Thursday in a shooting at a small group meeting at a church in Birmingham, Alabama (USA), local police said.

An unidentified suspect is in custody, said Captain Shane Ware of the Vestavia Hills Police Department. The shooting was reported at St. Stephens in the late afternoon, Ware said.

The captain said another victim was being treated for an “unknown injury” at an area hospital.

According to the church calendar, an event called “Boomers Potluck” was scheduled for this Thursday, but it is not yet known whether violence occurred at this gathering.

Ware did not respond to questions at any of the three media briefings about the shooting.

“If anyone needs to relay any information about this investigation to the Vestavia Hill Police Department and our detectives, I need them to call the local police number,” he said.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey sent her condolences to the victims. “I’m glad to hear the shooter is in custody,” Ivey said. “This should never happen in a church, in a store, in the city or anywhere. We continue to closely monitor the situation.”
