USA: Americans warned of possible attacks in Sweden in retaliation for Koran burning

The embassy of USA at Sweden warned Americans who are in or will visit the Scandinavian country to be extra careful because retaliation could occur, as a man set fire to the Koran.

“US citizens are advised to exercise caution when going to public places frequented by large numbers of people,” said a statement posted Sunday on the embassy’s website, warning of possible attacks by unidentified assailants, in retaliation for the burning of the Muslim holy book by a far-right politician.

“Gathering places, such as places of worship, may be targeted,” the statement said, urging citizens to also be careful when near diplomatic missions, avoid crowds and keep a low profile.

The US has not updated its travel advisory for Sweden, which today urges US citizens to take “usual” precautions in that country.

Sweden’s security service was aware of the US warning, a spokesman, Adam Samara, said, but referred further clarification to US authorities. The agency’s assessment today is that the threat of attacks remains “high,” at level 3 on a five-point scale, he added.
