USA and Iran: Second meeting on nuclear agreement should be in Rome, says source

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will meet for the second time with Iranian authorities next Saturday (19) to continue discussions about a new nuclear agreement in the country.

The place has not yet been defined, but according to a source familiar with the planning of CNN the meeting will probably happen in Rome.

According to Trump, agreeing with a new nuclear agreement with Iran is “very easy”.

Before last Saturday’s meeting, the US President said the only thing that cannot happen is Iran taking nuclear weapons: “I want it [o Irã] Be a great rich nation. The only thing is… they can’t have a nuclear weapon (…) if we have to do something very severe, we’ll do it, ”he said.

The US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the first meeting in Oman. The two spoke directly with each other after two and a half hours of indirect conversations with OMON officials who acted as intermediaries.

Subsequently, Araghi said Saturday’s meeting “arrived very close” to reach a structure for negotiations and emphasized that both sides seek a deal as soon as possible. It is unclear how Trump’s agreement is imagining it would be different from that mediated by the Obama administration, from which Trump has retired, but experts and authorities highlight how extraordinarily a deal needs to be.

However, experts and authorities have criticized the decision to appoint Steve Witkoff as an American representative, saying that the diplomat does not have a “deep rule” on these issues and expressing hostility in the next meeting, as it comes from a distinct area:

“It is not about the art of agreement, but the science of nuclear proliferation. These discussions will need to be very, very technical nature. He (Trump) has appointed a representative who comes from the real estate market and who does not have a deep mastery of these issues. On the other hand, we have Iranian diplomats who have been negotiating and reflecting on these technical issues for two decades ago. Conciliated, ”said Karim Sadjapour, a senior political analyst and researcher at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in Portuguese, Carnegie Fund for International Peace.
