USA: Apple employees in Maryland voted in favor of forming a union

Employees of Apple Inc. in Maryland yesterday voted in favor of forming a union, the first employees in a retail store of the technology giant in the USA.

More than 100 workers in Townson, near Baltimore, “voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining the International Association of Aerospace Engineers and Workers,” the union said in a statement on its website.

The workers at Townson, who formed the Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, “have the support of the vast majority of our colleagues,” wrote a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

“This is not something we do against or to provoke conflict with our administration,” they said.

An Apple spokesman told Reuters in an email that the company had “nothing to add at this time”.

Trade union efforts are gaining momentum in a number of major US companies, including Amazon.com Inc. and Starbucks Corp.

Apple employees in Atlanta who sought to form a union withdrew their request last month, alleging intimidation.

Some current and former Apple employees started criticizing the company’s working conditions online last year, using the hashtag #AppleToo.
