US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked on Wednesday that India and Pakistan work together to reduce tensions after the attack of Islamic militants last week at Caxemira managed by India, which killed 26 people, according to the State Department.
Rubio talked separately with India Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressing his support for India in the fight against extremism and installing Pakistan to cooperate in the investigation of the attack after Rubio’s calls.
Wednesday’s calls mark the highest levels of simultaneously known Washington’s publicly known diplomatic commitments to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan since the April 22 attack.
India is an important US partner to combat the growing influence of China. Pakistan remains an ally of Washington, even though its importance diminished after US removal from neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.
State Department’s statements after the calls called the attack on Caxemira “terror” and “inconceivable,” and said Rubio spoke to Pakistan “about the need to condemn him.”
Rubio “asked for the cooperation of the Pakistani authorities in investigating this unacceptable attack,” said the state department. Sharif’s office said he asked Rubio to exhort India to “reduce rhetoric.”
The secretary asked the Asian neighbors with nuclear weapons to work with each other “to reduce tensions, restore direct communications and maintain peace.”
Washington asked other countries to help reduce tensions and asked India and Pakistan to work in a “responsible solution.”
The US government condemned the attack without criticizing Pakistan. India blamed the country, which denied responsibility, asking for a neutral investigation.
The cashmire, mostly Muslim, is claimed entirely by Hindu’s majority, and by the Islamic majority that controls only parts of the region and have already waged wars because of it.
After the attack, India suspended a treaty regulating water sharing, and both countries closed airspace to each other’s airlines. The two countries exchanged fire along the border.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hindu nationalist, promised to punish those responsible. Pakistan states that a military action of India was imminent.
