USA: At least 46 people were found dead inside a truck tug in Texas

At least 46 people were found dead inside a truck tug in Texas, the head of the San Antonio Fire Department said during an emergency press conference.

“We have received 46 bodies so far,” said Charles Hood, adding that sixteen irregular migrants – twelve adults and four children – had been admitted to hospitals “consciously”. Among the dead, Mr. Hood stressed, there are no children, but many of the victims according to the information he gave were teenagers and young people.

Trucks like the one found in San Antonio, about 240 kilometers from the Mexico-US border, are often a means of transportation used by undocumented immigrants who want to reach the American dream.

This is a very dangerous undertaking: trucks rarely have air-conditioned trailers and the people who board them are at risk of dehydration and even death.

“The patients we saw were burning, they had heatstroke, they were exhausted from the heat, and there was no sign of water on the tug,” said the San Antonio fire chief.

The temperature in San Antonio reached 39.4 ° Celsius yesterday, with high humidity.

As the head of the fire brigade characteristically said, his men were found in front of “a pile of corpses”.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard spoke on Twitter about the “tragedy” in San Antonio, adding that his country’s consul general in the US capital rushed to the scene, although “the nationalities of the victims are not known,” to provide assistance if needed. He later noted on the same social networking site that two of the people admitted to hospitals were Guatemalans.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus spoke of the worst incident of its kind in the city’s history. He announced that three people have been arrested and clarified that the investigation into the tragic event will be carried out by the federal law enforcement agencies.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott immediately seized the opportunity to blame Democratic President Joe Biden.

“These deaths are the responsibility of Biden. They are the result of a deadly policy of opening the border,” said Governor Abbott.

Arrivals of illegal immigrants to the United States have risen sharply since Joe Biden was elected president, although the head of state has been trying to stem the tide of immigration since trusting Vice President Kamala Harris to handle the case.

In July 2017, a similar tragedy was recorded when ten migrants were found dead in a truck tug found by San Antonio police in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart supermarket. The driver of the truck, James Matthew Bradley Jr., was sentenced in 2018 to life in prison for his role in trafficking.
