The son of the American author Paul Oster, Daniel Oster, who was prosecuted for manslaughter after the death of his daughter from a drug overdose, died on Tuesday in New York, police announced.
Some American media reported that his death was also due to an overdose.
The 44-year-old Daniel Oster was found unconscious on a subway dock in Brooklyn on the morning of April 20th. He was taken to hospital where he died on the 26th of the month, a New York police spokesman said. According to other police sources, cited by the New York Post, Oster died of “overdose”.
Daniel Oster was arrested, prosecuted and released on bail ten days ago on charges of killing his 10-month-old daughter, Ruby. The baby was found unconscious on Nov. 1 while under the supervision of his father at his home in Brooklyn. He was hospitalized but succumbed after, according to police, suffered acute fentanyl and heroin poisoning.
Paul Oster, 75, is one of New York’s most famous authors, and his novels, such as The New York Trilogy, The Palace of the Moon, and Leviathan, have been translated into many languages. He is married to novelist Siri Hastved, but Daniel Oster’s mother is author Lydia Davis.
In Oster’s novel “The Night of Spells” the narrator is a writer whose son is a drug addict.
Deaths from overdose have been steadily rising in New York lately, according to the Athens News Agency. In the first half of 2021 they reached 1,233 (from 965 in the same period of 2020) while they were less than 1,000 for the whole year of 2015. 77% of deaths in 2020 were due to fentanyl, a powerful and very dangerous synthetic opioid which mixed with heroin or cocaine. The star of The Wire series, Michael K. Williams, died from this “cocktail” last September.
From April 2020 to April 2021, the US recorded a record number of overdose deaths, with more than 100,000.
