USA: Biden negative for Covid-19, persistent cough attributed to asthma

Joe Biden has tested negative for Covid-19 again, a White House spokesman said today after the US president coughed repeatedly during a speech on a bill aimed at boosting the US semiconductor industry.

President Biden delivered a speech on the South Lawn of the White House to ministers, members of Congress and businessmen before signing into law a bill providing $53 billion in domestic industry support to boost semiconductor manufacturing.

At several points in his speech, President Biden had to stop, turn to the side and cough into his mouth or drink some water. Which, as expected, did not go unnoticed and was commented on on social media.

The 79-year-old US president recently contracted Covid-19 twice and was in quarantine at the White House until Sunday.

“The president tested negative for Covid-19 yesterday and this morning,” a White House spokesman told reporters after Biden’s speech.

Joe Biden has suffered from asthma in the past, the White House’s co-ordinator for the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Asish Jha, said last July, explaining that he is “prone to bronchospasm” and has occasionally used inhalers.
