USA: Biden sees the leadership of the Armed Forces today

The President of the United States today convenes the members of the leadership of the American armed forces at the annual meeting in the White House, which is of special importance this year as Ukraine enters a new dangerous phase of the Russian attack and the United States plans to strengthen its military assistance. to Kyiv.

A “series of issues” will be discussed by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Mark Miley and other members of the military leadership, a National Security Council spokesman said.

Although the annual defense policy meeting is rarely newsworthy, important topics are on the menu this year, with Ukraine at the forefront and fears that a Russian attack could jeopardize security in Europe for years to come.

Russia has said it has entered a new phase of the war and is “methodically” seeking the “liberation” of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. The Western allies predict that the Russian attack may last for months, will be dismantled and will test the skills of Ukrainian fighters in the theater of battle.

The United States is expected to announce another $ 800 million military aid package to Ukraine in the coming days, as promised by Washington last week.

US forces are not fighting in Ukraine, but are indirectly involved in equipping, training and financing the Ukrainian military.

The extension of the war in Ukraine will also be a test of US public support for the country. Last month, Joe Biden asked Congress to approve record spending in peacetime next year.

Today’s meeting at the White House also takes place amid discussions about the future of NATO forces in Europe, including the Atlantic Alliance’s permanent presence on Russia’s eastern border.
