USA: “Breeder” kept 836 parrots in a room of his house – “Literally suffocating”

An Unexpected Christmas “Gift” Arrives at Animal Shelter in Michigan USA: more than 800 parrots, kept by a man locked in a room of his house.

«Three animal protection associations are working together today to care for the more than 800 parrots that have been entrusted to us“, The Detroit Animal Welfare Group took refuge through Facebook.

The son of an animal “collector” who wanted to breed parrots but his plan got scary along the way, he was the one who delivered 497 birds to the shelter on Christmas day. On Sunday, he returned with another 339 parrots.

«We did not expect this Christmas present“, Commented the people in charge of the shelter. “The birds come from a very unhealthy environment and the irresponsibility of their owner is obvious,” they added.

According to the breeder’s son, his father kept the parrots in cages, in a room of the house. They spent $ 1,200 on food each month.

“They were on top of each other and they were literally suffocating. They were very, very stressed, they could not move. “We had to take them out and put them in other cages,” Kelly Lembodi, the shelter’s manager, told the Detroit Free Press.

After being examined by a veterinarian, as reported by the Athens News Agency, the parrots will be given for adoption. Some need treatment. The shelter, however, pointed out that it is a serious commitment to take on a parrot, since this species lives an average of 6-15 years.

In the US, those who collect animals and do not take good care of them can be prosecuted. The shelter, however, stated that it has not made a complaint about the parrots that were rescued.
